Hate Crime Awareness Week 2008

see the difference be the difference
The fourth hate crime awareness week promises to be our biggest ever. The week kicks off with the first North West Regional Hate Crime Conference at the JJB stadium. This year's theme is "See the difference, be the difference". All the events are aimed at raising awareness of Hate Crime and the events are free and open to everyone.

The North West Regional Conference

The conference starts at 9.30am with a chance for the delegates to introduce themselves to each other (networking). Lord Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, will welcome everyone at 10.00am. Unfortunately Vernon Coaker is unable to attend the conference as advertised; Paul Giannasi has kindly stepped in to give the key note speech at 10.10am.

Speeches from Sergeant Kate Crompton, from Greater Manchester Police, Karen Flood, from the Learning Disability Coalition, and Tom Sweeney, from the Crown Prosecution Service, will follow. Each speaker will look at a different aspect of Hate Crime and share their knowledge and experience of dealing with hate crime.

After lunch there is a choice of 5 workshops and a presentation of SENTINEL, the hate crime reporting system for schools. The conference closes at 3:50pm.

The Hate Crime awareness agenda is not just about a one week event. To raise awareness of Hate Crime all year round we are advertising on a black cab for the whole of 2008. The cab is already on the streets and has so far been spotted outside Morrisons and North Western train station. Have you spotted it yet?
