Hate Crime Conference

On February 18th 2008, Wigan Metropolitan Council in conjunction with Wigan & Leigh Community Safety Partnership will host a conference on the difficult and complex issue of understanding and tackling Hate Crime and the challenges that are presented to services in the Borough, in the Region and across the North West. The is day one of a week long series of events forming part of Wigan's fourth annual Hate Crime Awareness Week. The conference will be held on 18th February 2008 at the JJB Stadium (The Marquee), Robin Park, Wigan.

Overview of the Conference

The conference will discuss ways in which to tackle race and faith, disability, sexuality, gender and age based hate crime, including looking at how to reduce resistance in a diverse and inclusive culture. Our Regional partners will share their experiences of resistance with us and we will discuss the lessons learned from these experiences in the North West Region.

We will also look at what can be done in the Region to respond to hate crime and resistance and how to enable victims to move away from violence based on hate.

Conference Aims

The conference aims to bring together a range of communities, practitioners, academics and policy makers to look at practical ways of reducing hate crime and the impact of hate crime.

The conference will also launch several products designed to help support the work of tackling hate, including: 

  • An 'in house' training DVD that has been produced by Greater Manchester Police alongside victims of hate crime
  • Pictorial 'Reporting Hate Crime Pack' a set of postcards illustrating what hate crime is ands means of reporting and gaining support
  • Hate Crime - The Facts. A pictorial booklet outlining where, why, when and how to report Hate Crime. Including agencies that can provide advice and support.
