Each month thousands of reports are made to the police and local authorities concerning young people. In some cases young people are simply hanging about in groups and generally not causing any problems. However in some areas, we see an increase in communities reporting criminal damage and anti-social behaviour often linked to alcohol mis-use.
During the summer our Fire & Rescue colleagues respond to incidents of small rubbish fires and, of greater concern, young people at risk of drowning, particularly during warm weather. Council colleagues delivering environmental services also see increased littering coupled with the general rise in graffiti. In general, communities still perceive the school holiday period to be more problematic than any other time of the year.
To address community concerns, the Wigan & Leigh Building Stronger Communities Partnership ,which comprises of partners from Health, Fire & Rescue Services, Probation, Police, Council and Voluntary sectors aims to promote good practice, maximise the opportunities to raise awareness and reassure local communities through a phased approach
Phase 1 - Prevent and raise awareness
Distribution of posters and postcards in schools to raise awareness of the consequences of ASB and alcohol related crime, schools talks to raise the dangers of open water and to promote alternative swimming arrangements.
Phase 2 - Enforcement, diversion and community reassurance
These include providing opportunities for young people to get involved in play/sporting/water safety activities that are going on in their community. Police led operations including Operation Stay Safe, alcohol test purchasing and off road biking campaigns will also be carried out during the summer.
Phase 3 - Evaluation and learning
Learning outcomes, what worked, what didnt, good practice and crime reductions during the summer as a result of Partnership activity.
