Background
The Community Improvement Project (CIP) began as a joint venture between the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and Wigan Council's Community Safety Team. They appointed a dedicated Community Improvement Coordinator to spearhead the project.
Shirley Johnson was seconded from the Council's Youth Offending Team for the duration of the project. She created an action plan and contacted other services to see if they wanted to get involved - and they did!
Planning began in September and the 4 areas were the CIP's would take place were chosen: Hag Fold, Platt Bridge, Higher Folds, and Lower Ince.
The launch
The project was formally launched on the 20th November 2007; representatives from a range of agencies were invited to attend a half day conference to add their ideas to the plan and to sign a service level agreement to commit to the project for the full year.
The process
The project has 6 stages:
- intelligence gathering and information distribution
- community consultation
- education sessions in local schools
- enforcement
- environmental clean ups
- community week
