Borough residents are being urged to have their say about alcohol as part of the Regional North-West’s ‘Big Drink Debate’.

The Wigan & Leigh Community Safety Partnership is backing an NHS North West ‘Our Life’ programme to find out more about people’s attitudes to alcohol and problem drinking. Everyone in the Borough should be able to enjoy a drink without harming themselves or others – or being afraid of violence. The Big Drink Debate is the first step towards making a regional difference by promoting safer drinking.

Recent statistics have indicated that the North West is the region with the highest level of people with hazardous /harmful drinking behaviour - 29% - and the second worst in the country for binge drinking adults.

You can tell the Wigan and Leigh Community Safety Partnership’s drug and alcohol action team what you think are the highs and lows of alcohol and what you think about related issues such as advertising and drink-fuelled crime by visiting the link above and filling out an anonymous questionnaire which we hope will encourage the people of the Borough to think about:

  • Aspects of why they drink
  • Why they think people drink too much
  • What might influence people to drink less
  • If they think something should be done to help people drink less, and what people think could be done to influence such changes.

The Big Drink Debate will help us to understand people’s drinking habits and attitudes towards alcohol, and inform the Partnership on the action to be taken on alcohol issues. It will also help us to plan the most appropriate work with Wigan communities to make sure that we in Wigan live longer, healthier lives.
