Pemberton was later divided when Adam de Windle gave some of his land to his friend Adam de Pemberton. In 1367 some land was given by Adam to one of descendents called Kathleen, when she married Alexandre de Worsley - this becames his mesnes, (a mesnes lord is one holding an estate from a feudal lord). Hence - the area became known as Worsley Mesnes.
The village developed firstly as a farming community but with the onset of the industrial revolution, two cotton mills were built and mine workings were opened, bringing people from as far away as Cornwall. Terraced houses were built from about 1850 to accommodate newcomers to the village. Worsley Mesnes prospered, as did the tradesmen, who supplied goods from their horses and carts.
Village life disappeared as Worsley Mesnes was swallowed up by the spreading town of Wigan.
The ward is another which is largely dominated by flashes, and the Leeds to Liverpool canal also passes through the area.
