Ward Information

The Lowton East Ward covers a 11.2 Square Kilometer area.

Lowton was one of the berewicks of the Royal Manor of Newton, later being one of the members of the Barony of Makerfield. Byrom Manor, later to feature the ancestoral ancestral home of the poet John Byrom and was constructed during the 18th century, is recorded as early as 1212, where the family prospered for centuries. Byrom Hall at one time featured a moat.

To the south of Lowton is Highfield Moss, part of which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The 21.3 hectare (52.6 acre) site was designated in 1986 for its biological interest. The interest is predominantly mire communities of which it is the best example in Greater Manchester.

In the north of the ward is also home to  Pennington Flash. The 70-hectare lake is the centrepiece of this rare and beautiful country park. Now an extensive nature reserve with several bird hides and a network of tracks and footpaths. Facilities include a small information centre, a nine-hole municipal golf course and a pay and display car park.

This page provides up to date crime and demographic statistics for the Lowton East Ward area. All statistics have been taken from the 2001 Census. Full census breakdown can be found by visiting the national statistics website (external link).

Demographics

The demographic make up of an area can influence how much crime is experienced within that area. The more densely populated an area is the more likely it is to experience higher levels of Crime and disorder. The Lowton East Ward includes the areas of: Aspull Common, Lowton, Lowton Common, Lowton Heath, Lowton St Mary’s and Wash End. The ward has an overall population of 12,426 spread across 5025 Households, giving an average of 2.5 people per household.

Deprivation

The level of deprivation is measured by various factors such as levels of unemployment, health and education. Research suggests that the level of deprivation in an area is strongly linked to the level of crime. Super Output Areas (SOAs) are nationally defined boundaries which were constructed to compare statistics on a small scale. They have an average of 1500 residents in each SOA, there are 200 SOAs in the Wigan Borough. There are 9 lower level super output areas (SOA) within the Lowton East ward, 0 score in the bottom 10% of SOAs for deprivation nationally. Further indicators of deprivation there are 170 households in the Lowton East ward without Central Heating, and 714 Households without access to a car.
