Ward Information

The earliest surviving documentary reference to Hindley, located in the centre of the borough, dates from the year 1212.

Until the late 19th century a tourist attraction in the shape of two ‘burning wells’ existed in Hindley, caused by the natural seepage of inflammable coal gas through water.

Nineteenth century Hindley is indelibly linked with the name ‘Eckersley’. Colonel Nathaniel Eckersley lived at Laurel House and served with the Duke of Wellington. A ceremonial sword, presented to him for his service at the military station in Manchester established after the Peterloo riots, can be seen in the town’s library.

His great nephew, also Nathaniel, was a wealthy Wigan mill-owner who built the library and local park with money left by his friend, local scholar and landowner John Leyland.

This page provides up to date crime and demographic statistics for the Hindley Ward. All statistics have been taken from the 2001 Census. Full census breakdown can be found by visiting the national statistics website (external link).

Demographics

The demographic make up of an area can influence how much crime is experienced within that area. The more densely populated an area is the more likely it is to experience higher levels of Crime and disorder. The Hindley Ward includes the areas of: Hindley and Chapel Fields. The ward has an overall population of 12,016 spread across 5,057 Households, giving an average of 2.4 people per household.

Deprivation

The level of deprivation is measured by various factors such as levels of unemployment, health and education. Research suggests that the level of deprivation in an area is strongly linked to the level of crime. Super Output Areas (SOAs) are nationally defined boundaries which were constructed to compare statistics on a small scale. They have an average of 1500 residents in each SOA, there are 200 SOAs in the Wigan Borough. There are 8 lower level super output areas (SOA) within the Hindley ward, 2 score in the bottom 10% of SOAs for deprivation nationally. Further indicators of deprivation there are 417 households in the Hindley ward without Central Heating, and 1712 Households without access to a car.
