Operation Challenge Safe4Summer

Safe4summer is a partnership-based approached aimed at keeping young people safe and addressing community concerns about youth related crime and anti-social behaviour during the summer.

Each month thousands of reports are made to the police and local authorities concerning young people. In some cases young people are simply hanging about in groups and generally not causing any problems. However in some areas, we see an increase in communities reporting criminal damage and anti-social behaviour often linked to alcohol mis-use.

Borough residents were given the opportunity to have their say about alcohol as part of the Regional North-West’s ‘Big Drink Debate’.

The Wigan & Leigh Community Safety Partnership is backing the NHS North West ‘Our Life’ programme to find out more about people’s attitudes to alcohol and problem drinking. Everyone in the Borough should be able to enjoy a drink without harming themselves or others – or being afraid of violence. The Big Drink Debate is the first step towards making a regional difference by promoting safer drinking.

Recent statistics have indicated that the North West is the region with the highest level of people with hazardous /harmful drinking behaviour - 29% - and the second worst in the country for binge drinking adults.
